Day 1 – A beautiful start

Portage-la-Prairie to Winnipeg

Here we are getting ready to start at kilometre “zero” for cycling4water (2016 edition). It is quite unremarkable. Nothing to really remind me that two years and 11 days ago I had that terrible bike accident at this very spot (losing control after rubbing my front tire against Richard Blashek’s rear wheel). The only way I could determine the exact place  was through using the MapMyTracks record from that very day where I went from 30 km/hr to 0 km/hr in 2 seconds.

Alain has begun his work as our support driver. He found a lovely spot for our first break and took this photo as we rolled in for refreshments.

Speaking of refreshments, people keep asking about what we eat. They are surprised at how much sugar we consume. “That’s not healthy!” Our host, Ron, insisted on donating us these snacks – calories, calories, calories. It is all about calories. We’ll be burning between 6000 and 7000 calories every day. It doesn’t matter too much how much sugar we eat.

Another milestone today – my first flat.  Timo rarely has a flat. He insists I need to buy Schwalbe Marathon Plus. He hasn’t had a flat in 10,000 km.

No speaking engagement tonight but we will be speaking at a men’s breakfast tomorrow morning.
